Those who gave their lives from Yarm ______________________________________

WARD, Edwin. Pte 27953 7th Yorks.

Return to Yarm Roll Call

The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Killed in action 5 Nov 1916. He was born in Guisborough and enlisted in Stockton while living in Yarm. The newspaper refers to a Pte Richard Ward being killed, adding that he was employed by Hird’s Skinyard and being of a quiet and affable disposition was much respected. This presumably refers to Edwin because of coincidental dates and the fact that no Richard Ward is identified as being of Yarm. Thiepval Memorial, France

Yarm1914 believe that Edwin was born in 1882 in Guisborough. In 1881 the family lived at 44 The Village Carlton where William 36 and Sarah Ward 30 lived with Joseph 10, George 9. Sarah Jane 6, Alfred 4, Robert William 2 and Williams father William Ward aged 76. The whole family were born in either Billdale or Carlton. In 1891 they moved to Silver Street in Yarm via Guisborough. Their youngest son Thomas was born in Yarm in 1885 and his mother died when he was 3. In 1901 Edwin moved to Victoria Terrace in Yarm with his father 56, Joseph 30, Sarah Jane 26 and Thomas 16. Thomas became a warehouseman and boarded with Jane Wilson on the High Street. The remaining Ward family moved to a 4 room house in Jacksons Yard and were living there in 1911. Edwin was a general labourer.
